The next major breakthrough arrived during the 17th century. In 1642, French mathematician Blaise Pascal developed the Pascaline, a mechanical calculator designed to help his father perform tax calculations. The device used gears and wheels to perform addition and subtraction automatically. A few decades later, German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz expanded on Pascal's ideas and created machines capable of multiplication and division.
These inventions established an important principle: calculations could be automated through machinery. While early mechanical calculators were expensive and difficult to manufacture, they laid the foundation for future generations of calculating devices.
The Rise of Commercial Calculating Machines
During the 19th century, advances in engineering made mechanical calculators more practical for business use. Banks, insurance companies, government offices, and large corporations increasingly adopted calculating machines to handle growing volumes of financial data.

A slide rule is an analog computing device based on logarithmic scales, and although it cannot perform exact arithmetic in the same way as a calculator, it can quickly estimate multiplication, division, roots, and trigonometric functions.
For decades, slide rules were essential tools in engineering, navigation, and scientific research. Many of the engineers who worked on early aerospace projects and space missions relied on slide rules before electronic calculators became available.
The Birth of Electronic Calculators
The mid-20th century brought a dramatic shift in calculator technology. Electronic components began replacing mechanical gears and moving parts, and early electronic calculators were large, expensive machines often used by corporations and research institutions.
