International Parcel Tracking, Explained

Handoffs between carriers, country codes, and why the tracking sometimes goes dark mid-journey.

International shipments usually involve two carriers

The origin carrier (e.g. China Post, Royal Mail) hands the parcel to a destination carrier (e.g. USPS, Canada Post). Each maintains its own tracking system.

The handoff blind spot

Between the origin carrier's last scan and the destination carrier's first scan, your parcel can appear to stand still for days. It's actually flying or sailing — there's just no scanner in the air.

Reading the country code

UPU-format international numbers end in 2 letters identifying the origin country: CN (China), GB (UK), US (USA), CA (Canada), AU (Australia). Parcel Tracker Monkey uses this to suggest the right carrier.

The customs step

Once a parcel arrives in the destination country, it clears customs before the local carrier picks it up. This step can add anywhere from hours to several days depending on volume and content.

Frequently asked questions

The origin carrier loses visibility once the parcel leaves its network. Wait for the destination carrier's first scan — try tracking the same number on the destination carrier's site.
