Understanding Tracking Numbers

Length, prefixes, and check digits — how tracking numbers identify their carrier.

The format is the clue

Most carriers use a predictable structure. UPS numbers start with 1Z and are 18 characters. USPS numbers are commonly 20–22 digits. DHL Express is 10 digits. International numbers often end in a 2-letter country code like US, GB, or CN.

Check digits

The final digit of many tracking numbers is a checksum derived from the rest. It lets carriers reject typos before they hit the network — a feature Parcel Tracker Monkey leverages for auto-detection.

How auto-detection works

Parcel Tracker Monkey matches your input against carrier-specific regex patterns. If multiple carriers could match, you'll see all candidates and can pick the right one manually.
